There’s a new trend taking over the internet. It’s all over social media, with people braving the freezing temperatures, all in the name of health and fitness. But this trend isn’t just about gaining followers on instagram; it’s backed by real benefits that make every shiver worth it. So, why are people willingly subjecting themselves to icy waters and freezing temperatures? Jump in and I’ll let you in on why more and more people are willing to jump into bone-chilling water for the sake of their well-being.
Athletes Did it first
When it comes to recovery, cold plunges are a powerful tool. The science behind it lies in the process of vasoconstriction and vasodilation. Plunging into icy water causes blood vessels to constrict, reducing inflammation and flushing out metabolic waste. As the body adapts to the cold, blood vessels dilate, allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to flow back into the muscles. This rush of nutrients and oxygen aids in repairing damaged tissues and expediting the recovery process. So, while it may seem daunting to dip into freezing water, the benefits it brings for post-workout recovery make it an invaluable practice for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
It’s hard, but that’s the point
Cold immersion is the ultimate test of mental fortitude. Stepping into icy waters requires a willingness to embrace discomfort and push beyond our perceived limits. As we conquer the initial shock, our bodies adapt, and we develop a sense of resilience that extends far beyond the plunge pool. By continuously pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones, whether through cold plunges or other challenging experiences, we expand our capabilities and foster a mindset of limitless possibilities. It’s through these challenges that we truly discover the extent of our strength and potential.
You’ll be happy you did it
Cold plunges have an incredible impact on our mood, leaving us feeling uplifted, energized, and even euphoric. This intense change in our mood is attributed to the release of dopamine and endorphins—the brain’s natural feel-good chemicals. As the cold shock subsides, a sense of positivity and well-being washes over us, clearing away mental fog. The combination of the invigorating cold, the release of dopamine, and the surge of endorphins creates a powerful cocktail that can instantly elevate our mood and leave us with a sense of exhilaration that lingers long after the plunge.
We had to try it ourselves
Our trainers took the plunge in a recent workshop with Jacob Mark, a Performance Coach, Certified Wim Hof Method instructor and a Certified Oxygen Advantage Instructor. They challenged themselves and experienced the benefits first hand!
