Two Simple Tests for Shoulder Health

Finding a delicate balance between stability and mobility is crucial for optimizing movement patterns, reducing your risk of injury, and enhancing overall performance. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a fitness enthusiast, understanding your body’s needs regarding stability and mobility can significantly impact your training regimen.

With paddling season coming up, concerns about shoulder health should be top of mind if you want to enjoy your time on the water all summer long. The first step is to assess what your needs are. Complete these two tests to see if you could benefit from improving your mobility or stability.

Shoulder Mobility

Arms should stay straight

Reach 180-degrees of range

No lumbar extension

If you are unable to achieve 180 degrees of shoulder flexion, then you can benefit from adding the following mobility exercises:

Traps Myofascial release

Lat Myofascial Release

Core Stability

  • Opposite arm and leg should be parallel to the floor
  • Elbow touches the knee
  • Stable movement

If you are unable to maintain stability while performing the bird dog test, then you can benefit from adding the following stability exercises:

If you are struggling with both, we would suggest focusing on developing a strong and stable core. Having a strong, stable base will just allow your joints to move more freely.

If you have enough shoulder mobility and core stability for your needs, then working on getting stronger throughout a full range of motion will help to further reduce your risk of injury.
