This is What Happens to Your Body When You Don’t Work Out

There once was a point in human history when the majority of people’s days were spent doing strenuous labour. Yeah… those days are long gone. Now, most of us are stuck behind desks, glued to screens, typing away at a keyboard. In today’s society, if we want to stay fit and healthy we have to dedicate time to working out. If we don’t make the active decision to move every day, unfortunately, our bodies deteriorate pretty quickly. And I’m not here to scare you into hitting the gym but rather to motivate you to give your body the love and care it deserves.

Farewell Muscle, Hello Body Fat

Did you know that, on average, adults who don’t engage in regular strength training lose 4 to 6 pounds of muscle per decade? Muscle loss can slow down your metabolism, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight. Regular weight training will help to preserve this muscle mass so your body fat won’t creep up as you age.

An Unhappy Heart

Not exercising could also increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. According to recent studies, inactive individuals have a 30-50% higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to those who exercise regularly. This statistic alone would motivate me to get to the gym!

Blood Sugar Rollercoaster

We all love a good rollercoaster at the amusement park, but not when it comes to our blood sugar levels. Regular exercise helps regulate blood sugar. Without it, you might find yourself on a wild ride of spikes and crashes. Unstable blood sugar levels can lead to energy slumps, mood swings, and, over time, an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Losing your Independence

Exercise isn’t just about looking good; it’s about living well. As we age, maintaining muscle mass, bone density, strength, and cognitive function becomes crucial for independence. Skipping those workouts could mean waving goodbye to not just your ability to get up from the toilet but also your memory, motor skills, and emotional control. And it could mean the difference between a small injury versus a fatal fall!

The good news is it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. Deciding to take the stairs instead of the elevator, committing to a few short workouts per week, challenging your body in new ways – these are all ways you can help combat the misfortunes of our sedentary lives. Future you will thank present you for making these small but impactful choices!
