Fitness fun in the capital
After narrowly escaping the final winter storm of the season, it seems like Spring may actually be upon us and that means warmer weather and thinking about all of the fun things we can do in this beautiful city. Let’s face it, we are a tough group of people here in Ottawa. Our Winters are brutal and yet we find ways to embrace the cold with activities like winterlude and skating on the Rideau canal, but this city really does come alive in the summer. So we thought it would help you get through the rainy days of Spring if you had a few ideas for fun things to do in the city this summer!
Ottawa Race Weekend – Saturday, May 26 – Sunday, May 27
As one of the major events of the year, Ottawa race weekend really feels like the kick-off party for the beginning of summer. Racers from all around come to race the streets of Ottawa and along the canal. With 6 races to choose from, this event really encourages everyone to get involved in some long weekend physical activity. Below are the race options and prices if you and your friends, or family, want to get involved.
Yoga on the Hill
If you don’t know about this weekly event on the lawn of Parliament Hill, this is probably one of the most instagram-ed activity of the summer. Every Wednesday Lululemon Athletica hosts free yoga in front of centre-block on Parliament Hill. This lunch-time stretch session runs from May through August (weather dependent) from 12pm to 1pm. It is BYOM (bring your own mat) and all skill levels are welcome.
5K Foam Fest – Saturday, July 28
Love foam parties but also want to stay on track with fitness goals? Well them the 5K Foam Fest in Ottawa is for you! This easy-going event blends the fun of foam parties with the excitement of a race. The 5K distance makes it suitable for all skill levels of walkers and runners. Similar to events like Mud hero and the Spartan race, this foam filled festival includes a course through the Commando Paintball field, complete with foam, obstacles, and a medal at the end of the race – no matter where you place! As of Sunday, April 15, the race is 65% sold out so get your tickets soon so you don’t miss out on the fun!
Ottawa has a ton of activites going on in the summer. We may have brutally cold winters, but we also amazing summers. Getting out for a run on the canal, enjoying some of the local beaches, tasting the amazing menus offered around the city can really help you make the most of the summer.
