Don’t ignore the warning signs!
Today I want to write about something that is on my heart after doing a consultation this morning with a new client in my chiropractic clinic.
This person was telling me about the fact that her right arm was going numb, that is, completely “falling asleep”, every single night. No exceptions. This had been happening for quite some time, and now recently it was starting to happen with her left arm as well. She would wake up, raise her arm in the air, shake it to “wake it back up”, and then go back to sleep, only to wake up with total numbness again a short time later. This would happen at least 3 to 4 times per night.
Arm numbness, or numbness anywhere in the body, is a very serious problem. It is a clear indication that there is nerve compression happening somewhere in the body. Nerve compression can be caused by an injury, trauma, chronic poor posture, or lack of normal alignment in the spine. (Spinal nerves go to every part of the body and supply “power” to muscles, tissues, and organs.) The specific location and cause of nerve compression in the spine can be easily determined by a Chiropractor, who can then also determine how correctable the problem is.
For this woman with arm numbness, the main area of nerve compression was in her lower neck. It was likely caused by chronic poor posture and lack of normal curvature in the neck. You could say that the “power” to her arm was being disconnected by this nerve compression. Fortunately for her, it is a correctable problem, but only because it was identified early enough and the dangerous symptoms weren’t ignored. In other cases, people choose to deal with symptoms like numbness by either ignoring it and hoping it will go away on its own (which most of the time, it won’t) or by masking the symptom with various over-the-counter or prescription medications.
So the message today is, don’t ignore the warning signs. If there is a symptom like numbness or even pain anywhere in your body, you must seek help to identify the cause of the problem as soon as possible.
