Can eating better and exercising more make you a better artist?

It has for Roger Feria Jr. For years, the 36-year-old pianist and composer had been busy with work and completing his doctorate studies at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music.  A healthy lifestyle often took a backseat.

“I’d wanted to lose weight for a while, but everything else seemed to take precedence over my health,” he said.

He and wife Emily often walked past Free Form Fitness’s ByWard Market location. Last fall, they finally decided to take the leap together with the introductory offer of eight sessions for just $96.

“We decided then to start investing in our health and taking it seriously,” he said.

He’s been coming in twice a week since December, working with trainers Luzia Jaeger Hintze and Alex Kenzora. Subject to the client’s preference, FFF always takes a team approach to training. Two heads truly are better than one, as different trainers have different perspectives and areas of expertise. It helps to keep things fresh and interesting for the client.

Luzia, for example, specializes in weight loss and addressing the psychological battle with food many people face when attempting to lose weight. She helped Roger shift his eating habits and understand the importance of eating fresh whole foods instead of packaged and processed treats to manage his caloric intake and cravings.

“That made a huge difference,” Roger said.

Luzia also helped him develop a nutrition plan that makes sense for Roger and that he can sustain for the long term.

“I don’t crave carbs as much as I used to,” he said. “My eating habits and the portions I take now have changed and I don’t feel deprived.”

But that isn’t all that’s changed in the past six months.

“I feel lighter, it’s easier to move,” Roger said. “I can even feel the difference in front of the piano. I sleep better and have more focus. It’s no longer a drag to look at myself in the mirror – making progress that I could see was important to me.”

And not just in the mirror, but in the gym, too.

“Seeing the weight that I’m training with increase as I go is really satisfying.”

Roger had worked with personal trainers before, but with one hour sessions instead of FFF’s 30-minute format. At FFF, he truly feels that he is working smarter, not just harder.

“With the one-hour sessions, I didn’t feel like I was getting as good of a workout as I do here in half an hour,” he said. “The way it is structured, I am doing cardio at the same time I am doing weights, which is new for me. At the end of every FFF session I feel that I couldn’t do any more and that the workout has been really effective.”

So what’s next?

“I want to continue losing weight,” Roger said. “I’ve been really happy with Luzia and Alex. Their knowledge about food and how to train is invaluable to me.”
