Egg Yolks – Good or Evil
Just when I thought the low fat/low cholesterol movement for heart disease was dwindling from its bad science, a new Canadian study just came out on Monday basically saying that eggs are just as bad as cigarettes and should be avoided.
I hate having to dissect a study but I’m writing this because this study has hit almost every main news source with headlines like “Egg yolks linked to heart disease” or “Egg yolks as bad as smoking” and it’s all based on nothing but bad science.
Here are the details of this disaster:
They had a group of 1262 people fill out a questionnaire at 5 different intervals within a 14 year span asking how many eggs they ate a week and looked at the research and set eggs alongside cigarettes. Without looking at factors like carbohydrate consumption, refined sugar, stress, activity level etc that as most of us know clearly have an impact.
Turns out that Dr Spence and Dr Davignon’s research is funded by Pfizer Canada, AstraZeneca Canada, and Mark Frosst Canada Ltd” and have received speakers fees from several pharmaceutical companies manufacturing lipid lowering drugs.
Let’s break down the study results:
Age from first visit: Went from 55.7 years old to 69.77 years old at last visit (I don’t know about you but 14 years ago my body was like brand new)
Egg consumption per week: Went from 0.41 a week to 4.6 a week (Not even 1 egg a day)
Smoking packs per year: Went from 14.1 to 17 (Notice the increase)
Total cholesterol: Went from 4.9 to 4.8 (Went down)
Triglycerides: Went from 1.88 to 1.85 (went down …good)
HDL (“Good” cholesterol): Went from 1.34 to 1.35 (went up …that’s a good thing)
LDL (“Bad” cholesterol): Went from 2.76 to 2.67 (Went down …good)
BMI: Went from 27.62 to 26.31 (Down …good)
Plaque area: Went from 101.45 to 175.77 (Bad)
As you can see everything got better except for the plaque area yet there is no mention of how this happened as all other levels improved. How can a study come up with a conclusion without understanding the mechanism of why it happened? It’s as ludicrous as saying people that wear hats are more prone to heart disease yet have no idea why. All this study shows is that plaque increases directly with age. This has nothing to do with egg yolks.
Keep eating your eggs, they’ve been in our diet for hundreds of thousands of years and are one of nature’s greatest “superfoods”.
